Microsoft: is bitcoin acceptance for Xbox users coming now?
Software giant Microsoft is preparing to add Bitcoin to its traditional payment methods. The first step is a user survey.
Rising cryptocurrency prices and a host of institutional investors continue to attract attention. The software giant Microsoft is apparently considering enabling payments in cryptocurrencies for the community of its Xbox family of consoles. On the social media platform Reddit, there is a screenshot of a poll that refers to Bitcoin Bank payment options for Xbox add-on content. The third question asks, „Which of these other payment options would you like to use with Xbox?“ There, the option to vote for Bitcoin is given as a choice in addition to credit card.
However, it is not certain whether this will be directly integrated by Microsoft in the near future. So far, Xbox players can pay in the German version of the Microsoft Store with direct debit, PayPal and the usual debit and credit cards. Another option is to use classic voucher cards from the retail trade to top up one’s credit. Of course, the digital counterparts of these vouchers are also available in the relevant online shops.
Microsoft already pays royalties via blockchain
Many gamers also enjoy the diversions via so-called keysellers. This key is the licence code with which the game can be played and is significantly lower than the price Microsoft charges for the original games. Especially with older titles, this saving is all the greater. Microsoft has often drawn the ire of Xbox fans for not adjusting prices downwards even for older games. However, buying these keys from unauthorised official keysellers is also associated with a high risk because you cannot be sure whether the game will actually run.
There has already been a rendezvous between the Xbox and the blockchain. However, it was primarily about payments to the game developers and the administration of player rights. Therefore, one possibility could also be to put a stop to the non-legitimate key sellers.
It is far from certain that Microsoft will actually accept payments via Bitcoin. Nevertheless, the survey alone is making waves in some user forums. Some are already complaining in advance about the high transaction costs associated with Bitcoin. Well, even if the Xbox inventor goes ahead and allows payments via Bitcoin, it can hardly be assumed that other payment methods will no longer be considered.
